This April, Stress Awareness Month, Bizect Consulting explored a simple framework we’re calling The Stress Equation:
Stress = High Demands + Financial Strain + Poor Sleep − Support
It is not a scientific formula, but it is a useful way to think about how stress builds, and what may help reduce it.
Stress is rarely caused by one thing alone. High work or family demands can stretch people beyond their capacity. Financial strain can create constant background pressure. Poor sleep can make it harder to recover, regulate emotions, and cope well. Support (friends/family networks), on the other hand, can act as a buffer.

To add a global lens, we also looked at Gallup country-level data on stress and worry alongside World Bank GDP per capita data for 2025. Across countries, higher GDP per capita appears to be linked to a modest decline in stress and a stronger decline in worry.

The takeaway: prosperity may help reduce some forms of pressure, but it is only one part of the equation. That is why stress should not be treated only as a personal issue. It is also an organizational, economic, and structural one.
