What’s the most popular cocktail? It depends on who you ask

Happy Cocktail Day. What’s the most popular cocktail? It depends on who you ask. Cocktail Day is observed on March 24, which makes today a good excuse to compare what “popularity” looks like across bar culture, trade coverage, and home-recipe demand (National Day Calendar n.d.).

In the interest of public knowledge, Bizect Consulting has taken on the very difficult work of cocktail testing.

Graphic, “What’s the most popular cocktail? Depends on who you ask”: the bartenders’ pick is the Negroni, the crowd pick is the Margarita, and the Martini is the variant king, from espresso and lemon drop to blue, passion fruit and classic.

At the world’s best bars, the Negroni still leads the pack. Drinks International says its 2025 classics ranking comes from a poll of award-nominated or award-winning bars from around the world, and the magazine’s list places Negroni #1, Old Fashioned #2, Margarita #3, and Espresso Martini #4 (Drinks International 2025).

The Margarita may be the most universal crowd favourite. It ranks #3 in Drinks International’s 2025 top-bars list, #3 in Bartender Spirits Awards’ 2024 roundup, and #1 in BBC Good Food’s “Top 10 most popular cocktail recipes” (Drinks International 2025; Bartender Spirits Awards 2024; BBC Good Food n.d.). That is why we framed it as the crowd pick in the graphic: it travels unusually well across professional-bar and home-recipe contexts.

And the Martini effect is real. Bartender Spirits Awards ranked Martini #1 and Espresso Martini #2 in its 2024 list, while BBC Good Food ranked Passion fruit martini #3 and Espresso martini #5 in its popular cocktail recipes list. On the bar-trends side, VinePair’s coverage of Drinks International’s 2025 report says Vodka Martini and Pornstar Martini both jumped by about 20 spots (Bartender Spirits Awards 2024; BBC Good Food n.d.; VinePair 2025).

Honourable mentions go to the Old Fashioned and Daiquiri for strong cross-list consistency, with Piña Colada and Aperol Spritz also showing up across both bar and home-recipe rankings. Another interesting pattern is the balance between old and new cocktails. The rankings are still led by long-established classics like the Negroni and Old Fashioned, but newer drinks and variants have clearly secured their place too.

At Bizect Consulting, we’ll continue doing the hard work of turning curious questions into usable insights, cocktail by cocktail.
